Dear Friends,

As we approach the opening date for the Warwick Poppies 2018 display we thought you would like an update and information on future events.

1. The Display

The Team are working hard in St Mary's Church Warwick to display the tens of thousands of handcrafted poppies we have received. The display will be formally opened at our Gala Dinner on the evening of 5th October, and then continues until 9th December. Please come and visit us! Our website contains details of Church opening times at http://www.warwickpoppies.org.uk/oening-times. If you are travelling some distance please email or ring us first in case of any short notice closures (for example for funerals).

The actual number of poppies on display will be announced at the Gala Dinner, when we will also unveil our Commemorative Brochure, available for purchase for a minimum of £2 from both the St Mary's Shop or Warwick Tourist Information Centre.

2. Coffee Morning with the team

Hundreds of people have made poppies. As our way of saying "Thank You" we would like to invite you to a free Coffee Morning at St Mary's on Friday 19th October, 10am-1pm. The team will be on hand to show you round the display and answer any questions. No booking required. We look forward to seeing you.

3. "Battles O'er"

The cease fire at the end of the First World War occurred at 11am on the 11th November 1918, however the Armistice was signed earlier that morning. To commemorate this, at 6am on Sunday 11th November this year, pipers will play the tune “When the Battle’s O’er” at War Memorials up and down the country. In Warwick, the commemoration will be led by local piper Andy Walker, who will then play further pieces for us in St Mary’s Church in front of our display of poppies.

In conjunction with Warwick Royal British Legion, we have organised a Breakfast to follow this event at Alderson House, and tickets are available for £10 per person. Please contact us via email to contact@warwickpoppies.org.uk, pop into Warwick Tourist Office, or call Tony Glover, local Chair of the RBL, on 07709-806325.

4. "We Will Remember" - free concert

At 6.30pm on the 11th November there will be a free concert in St Mary's Church to commemorate the centenary of Armistice Day. The Durufle Requiem and Readings will be performed by the Warwick Poppies Chorus and the Foundation Poppies Ensemble.

This community performance will be the musical highlight of the Warwick Poppies tribute. Readings of World War I poetry interleaved with the music to explore the themes of prayer, anguish and salvation that permeate Durufle's Requiem.

Some of Warwick's finest musicians have combined forces in his collaborative presentation under the baton of Alex Laing.

Admission by free ticket is available from St Mary's Shop, Mary Adams, or the Bridge House Theatre box office at www.bridgehousetheatre.co.uk or 01926-776438.

5. "The Christmas Truce"

Local historians, Alan Reed and Sir Andrew Hamilton are giving a lecture in front of our Poppy display in St. Mary’s Church at 7pm on Thursday 6th December, on the famous Christmas Truce of 25th December 1914, when troops on both sides of the conflict temporarily set down their arms.

They are co-authors of four well received books about the First World War (Meet at Dawn, Unarmed, We Good… We No Shoot, Stolen Lives and Where Are The Boys?). Copies are available for sale in St Mary’s Church shop.

The lecture and accompanying display have been kindly sponsored by the Royal Warwickshire Regimental Association. Free tickets for this event, to include refreshments, are available from both the St Mary's Shop and Warwick Tourist Information Centre.
